Magnesium Chloride is required for Taq Polymerase to function effectively. When the enzyme polymerase binds to the DNA strand, it requires magnesium ions with hydroxide groups to remove a hydrogen proton from the deoxyribose of the nucleotide, in order to add the next nucleotide.
