Stain with Ethidium Bromide

This procedure will be done by your teacher. (see below) Ethidium Bromide (EtBr) binds to DNA and fluoresces under ultraviolet light. When your gel is stained with EtBr, the EtBr will attach to the DNA molecules in your samples. Later, when you place your sample under ultraviolet light, the EtBr will show you where your DNA molecules are located. If the PCR procedure worked, you will have visible bands on the gel.

Caution: EtBr is a known mutagen. It causes mutations. It will adhere to your DNA just as it will adhere to the DNA on your gel. Always wear gloves when handling your gel.

Teacher happily handles known mutagen to protect students.
