Our first pilot project to test the Labscape system in an educational setting took place in
the spring of the 2002 school year. A select group of students at Ballard High School used
flat-panel, touchscreen computers running the Labscape system to carry out experiments from
the genetics curriculum. Students performed a DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction,
and gel electrophoresis with Labscape guiding them through the procedure and capturing data
throughout the experiment.
Preliminary results
for learning potential and usability were very positive, and the project will be
expanded to three schools in
the coming academic year (2002-2003).
We would like to acknowledge the sponsorship of the Learning Science
& Technology group at Microsoft and Intel Higher Education, whose
generous support made the CSI-Labscape pilot project at Ballard High
School a possibility.
